Our Role
This page follows the former About us section and summarises its historical text; it is not a verbatim copy.
Who we were
The Sustainable Development Commission was an independent adviser to the UK Government and the devolved administrations. It combined policy advice with scrutiny of progress towards sustainable development.
The Commission was a company limited by guarantee and an executive non-departmental public body. A framework agreement with the four governments defined its responsibilities.
Our organisation values
The Commission aimed to offer evidence-led, collaborative and transparent advice, and to promote practical ways of improving wellbeing while respecting environmental limits.
Our roles across the UK
Teams in London, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland worked with their respective governments. The work ranged from reviewing government operations and strategies to supporting departments in applying sustainable development principles.
